I have to tell you how great I thought this doctor was. I had to go in with our beloved 14 year old dog - Muffy who we had since she was 6 weeks old. Unfortunately, with her age and condition we had to say goodbye to our good friend. Dr Kimura could not have been more caring to us. She gave us all the time we wanted and when we knew it was time she came into a special room they have and let us stay with her. I can't thank her enough for taking the time for us and giving us the time with our dear little girl. When we are ready for a new dog we will be seeking Dr Kimura out for our pets care. |

This pet clinic in Victoria, B.C. is the kindest vet clinic I have found here. With both of my cats they have been very gentle, speaking softly, and treating them with great respect and care. All of the employees at this clinic are the same. They also deal in holistic approaches. Their understanding of how the pet owner feels is sincere and understanding. I highly recommend this clinic for the gentle and loving care for your pets with good knowledge. |

My 18lb cat had crystals in his bladder and was in a lot of pain. We rushed him to this hospital because they are privately owned and apparently charge more reasonable rates than the unionized vets in Calgary. 2 days later and $1100.00 we were able to pick up our cat and given a small amount of medication to get him through the next few days. He was home for 2 days before he starting panting like a dog and peeing on the floor, we rushed him back only to find out that he got a urinary track infection from the catheter, another $200.00. They gave us different medication for him which really seemed to help until he ran out of the first set of drugs – then major pain and distress followed. We rushed him back to the hospital again only to have them give him a couple more days of the same drugs that we went home with after his hospital stay. We are now up to $1500.00 and after the drugs were gone I had to take matters into my own hands and start giving the cat cranberry so he could deal with the pain, it did wonders while we waited 10 days to get his test results back. We called every day asking for results, even sat in the waiting room on day 6 to see if there was anything we could do to avoid bringing him back (he was very stressed in their care and it was a pre-existing condition so we didn’t feel bringing him back a 4th time for a huge fee was necessary). He is finally starting to feel better but I truly believe they didn’t take his size into consideration and gave him the same amount of medicine that they would give a 8lb cat. Having to beg them to give us a call back with test results for the next 4 days only caused us to get upset, the girls at the front desk are great but they have no control over anything and are unable to do anything but pass on a message asking the vets to call us back. The vets would never return a call so we got cranky with them only to find out that they had the test results for a couple days and didn’t feel the need to call us and let us know, even though we kept calling and letting them know that the cat was still suffering. Dr. Kumra pretty much told us to eff off and take our cat somewhere else, she is horrible to deal with and we do not recommend taking any animals to her. |

One could not ask for a greater level of compassion or competence from everyone in this office! Our family has had Dr. Catherine Miller at Royal Oak Vetrinary Hospital care for our pets for approximately 4 years. No matter the reason for contact, yearly maintenance or crisis, the service provided comes with empathy and respect.
I have found it necessary to rely on her judgement & guidance in knowing when our dearest Rossie should "pass over". She has diagnosed unusual clinical presentations and has the good common-sense to know when she should refer on to a specialist ASAP. In daily application, her Vetrinary knowledge is consistantly sound.
While I am sure dealing with an owners emotions such as grief or worry are not a driving motivation for entering Vetrinary training, Vets know full well that it is unavoidable they are often left doing just that. Because of this, I can only imagine the high burnout rate in this profession; yet Dr. Miller continues to offer proficiency for both pet and owner.
Could anyone ask for more?
From every corner of our hearts, thank-you Catherine!

We took our dog in with C-diff cause he got it from drinking from a toliet bowl in our house where I had c-diff We told them about it and asked them to test him for it . They assured us he did not have it even though he had all the symptoms that I had . They suggested we put him to sleep so we did .When we got the medical records back we found out he was NEVER tested for C-Diff
This is a premature and needless death of our beloved dog because of undo care and attention to our requests
They have since never addressed our concerns and I would NEVER recomend this clinic to anyone who cares about thier pet |

Very rude, disorganized, unfriendly and uncaring staff. Not to mention that they seem to have no regard for the aniamls they are treating. I cringe thinking of people who would unknowingly bring their animals here, especially in an emergency situation.
Unfortunately, the veterinary industry is often lacking in compassion and more concerned with how they increase their cash flow. Don't lose hope though, because there are some great vets and clinic's out there who do care about animals. |

This clinic is very unethical and is only concerned with $$$$$$. It seems that their margins are far more important than your pet or you. I would drive a litle further to Calgary Cat Clinic or Western Veterinary Hospital that has a solid reputation for treating animals and their family with respect. Thankfully, there are websites like these that can expose the bad clinics, as well as the good ones. |

These vets do not care about your pets- they care first and foremost about your money. Ran into a lady in the parking lot who had just picked up a tiny kitten that had just been hit by a car. Vet refused to treat it, even though the kitten was obviously hurt, without her paying for all of it. She had just found it on the road and was good enough to pick it up. I guess if a dog was hit in front of their door, they wouldn't treat it because there would be nobody to pay. Nobody expects vets to give away services but to deny care to an injured, abandoned animal is just cruel. Why even be a vet? Plus, they are way more expensive than anybody else. I will never go back. |

Not the place if your cat (or dog) needs overnight care or care during holidays (as I found out). Dr. Spooner is fantastic, but the youngest vet -- I forget her name -- Dr. Vandermeer, I think, was not very consistent. She just referred my cat (who had been in day treatment) to Vancouver Emergency, for his aftercare on a Sunday and Holiday -- if we thought he needed it, and then back to them when they re-opened, for the next several days. This left me confused about what was best for him -- did he need the aftercare or not? I don't have the medical background to make those decisions, but it didn't really make sense to me -- intensive care for about a week, then home with us, and then back to intensive care? Bottom line, it made me uncomfortable, so I switched to a vet that has overnight care available. |

We had an early morning emergency and decided to take our dog to the vets at McKnight 24hr emergency in Calgary. They are professional and had helped us previously when our two dogs escaped the yard and were dropped off by a police cruiser.
Tails, our Great Pyranees cross had sudden paralysis. We understand the need to suppress pain, but I was angered and concerned when we went to see him at the end of the day. He was so drugged he couldn't keep his tongue in his mouth. Maybe all vets are expensive but we were taken aback paying over 6 bills for meds and x-rays, only to find out we had two options. 1. go to a specialist?! $$$$$. 2. euthanize.
Perhaps I was too hard on them, but learning you have no choice but to put down your pet, as well has being hurt seriously in a financial sense is not a recipe for good review.
I found the attitude snobby, cold and objective. At one point I talked with them on the phone during the day. They said the xrays (450 dollars) were not conclusive. Later we took our dog to a holistic vet as a last ditch attempt to save him. He stated that x-rays are seldom reliable. For that cost, why bother?Seems we were offered no choice. I felt robbed.
Perhaps they do not deserve a bad review, but my feeling that vets over charge and offer little true treatment has only been confirmed by this experience.
My wife took Tails back to McKnight this morning to have him put down. They were right. We can not afford to keep a crippled dog alive in this system. Only the rich can afford the option. Seems that this operation is a good one to take your pet if you have lots of disposable income. They'll love you.

don't take your animal there, they will say they are doing the surgery and then someone else that's new does the surgery and your pet ends up dying in their care. there's no one there at night so when your animal is really sick they just pass away by themselves. you call and say your animal is sick and they turn you away and then your animal dies at home. you take your animal to get surgery and they say if there's swelling to come back and then they send you home and say to come back if it swells again and then it bursts and leaves a big hole. |

Dr. Haakstad almost killed my cat by using drugs that are considered "off-label" and contraindicated for a cat with his health condition. I approached the owner of the clinic (Dr. Cyfra) and Dr. Haakstad, after my cat became extremely sick immediately after Dr. Haakstad administered a dangerous cocktail of drugs to my cat. They both became extremely unprofessional and defensive with me. I could not believe how poorly they treated me and my cat. They did absolutely nothing to try to rectify the situation. My cat is now on several medications and has to have fluids daily. I have consulted with several veterinarians that have given my cat a very poor prognosis due to the damage that were done to his kidneys.
If you care about your pet, I would find a veterinarian that cares about your animal and is competent, compassionate and professional.

I would never, ever take an animal to this Vet, again! And I would advise anyone wanting to try this Vet,please don't do it. If you do, then know that your animal, will get very sick and/or die, being treated by this Vet!
As Dr. Dudzik is very good at doing that, to animals & making up things, wrong with your animal, when there isn't anything wrong, but it's just so she can take more money from you.
My Animal would still be here, if she had done her job properly, but because I don't have loads of money, she couldn't be bothered with checking up to see what was wrong so, I lost My Baby at only, 8yrs old.
Afterwards, the Vet Hospital yelled at her & when I went to see her, she hid in the back room. But trust me, she heard what I had to say, that's for sure.
Since then, I've heard horror stories about her, with her either making other animals very sick, to giving them, unnecessary surgeries, to making them die. Plus she never phones & checks up on your animal after surgery either, which is what is suppose to happen.
But see, she doesn't care about your Animal, as she has already received the money from you, after the surgery . As money is the most important thing to her, not the welfare of your animal, animals.
She is Money Hungry & Only Cares About Money & Trust Me, Doesn't Care One Bit About Your Animal, At All!! As all she cares about is herself, and how much money you have, to give to her pocket!
So if you care at all about your Dog, Cat, Etc then Please, Do Not Take Them To The Oak Bay Pet Clinic, in Victoria, B.C. Canada. |

I doublt there will be enough room on this page to tell you all the horror stories reguarding Debbie Beech. When she was only suppose to clean our dogs teeth she removes some as well. It took an infection and an other vet to see that when she removed the teeth she left the roots in the dogs gums. She must have just broke them off. One of our little dogs infection was so bad it rotted a hole in the roof of his mouth right into his sinus. Another little dog of ours was mis diagnose with a bad hip she said she did x rays but no one has been able to locate them including our new vet as it turns out the poor little guy has a very bad back and can now barely walk. His hip is just perfect. Our cat was given bladder surgery for bladder stones. Dr. Beech left a ridge in the bladder and now my poor cat has chonic bladder infections and constant visits to the vet. All of our pets are under constant care of a new vet Dr. Jeff Berry in Southampton. He has been unsuccessful in getting any files from Dr. Beech and most of the treatments our pets are receiving are due to the mistakes made by Dr Debbie Beech. She is the poorest of the poor. and the worst of the worst. I beg of you do not use this vet of you love your animals. L.A from Oakville |

Since I posted my unfavourable rating of McKnight Veterinary Clinic I have been contacted by Dr. Shelby Kimura personally. She re-did the blood work and gave my cat a complete exam all for free AND was excellent with him as she has always been. The original blood work was not lost, the clinic had some communication/technical issues which resulted in me not being advised of the results until now. Since Dr. Kimura was so kind, apologetic and SO willing to take responsibility and to ensure that this will never happen again, either to me or anyone else, I revise my rating of McKnight Veterinary Hospital from poor to excellent. Dr. Kimura has always been excellent with my cat, one of the many reasons this bad experience shocked me. Since anyone can make mistakes and yet few are willing to take responsibility when they do I think this bad experience in the end shows that Dr. Kimura has great character, professionalism, and caring... I can't tell you how much better her kindness has made me feel. |

I have been waiting for lab results (blood & urine) for my beautiful tabby cat for months. I have called half a dozen times or more since June 2009 and have been told I will receive a call back and I never do. Finally today I told McKnight Vet Hospital that I want my money refunded and a copy of my babies file so I can go to another vet. I hate complaining and being difficult however this is my cats health we are dealing with and I think they have been very negligent. Today I was told more excuses about them not knowing when was a good time to call and even a story about another vet calling me and I refused to speak with him - which of course is not true, I have never refused to speak with anyone. Clearly they have very faulty record keeping and its sad because they are such nice people. Then, of course, AGAIN today I was told I will receive a call back - so far nothing. Therefore, I am posting this because I don't want others to suffer the same fate - spending money they cannot afford only to receive no service and possibly jeopardize their pets health... in short I do not recommend this clinic based on this awful experience. |

Horrible - this ruthless woman has pushed 3 older cats I know to the brink of their demise - very rough handling and causing undue stress. My sweet 17-year old boy went for a nail trim, she was concerned about his weight loss, so did a routine exam on him, cleaning his ears was torture for him and he remained stressed for 4 more days and refused to eat. I took him to another vet for a second opinion, and ended up putting him to sleep, things were not looking good for him. I would NEVER EVER recommend her, and I have heard the same from others. |

Hi. If you're lucky enough to live in the Ottawa area, take your pet to Aylmer Veterinary Clinic across the river in Aylmer, Gatineau. Quebec Vets cost 50% less than Ontario Vets. I just found this out recently when this clinic was recommended to me. I love this place. They have treats available for cats and dogs, they weight your pet upon arrival each time you go there, they provide excellent, compassionate care and all for a fraction of the cost in Ontario. I will never go back! |

NIGHTMARE! The worst place ever! I trusted them and my pet ended up brain damaged by an insulin overdose. The vet left his son, who had NO formal veterinary training, alone to care for the patients. He used the wrong syrings and gave my cat a massive overdose of insulin. Then, my cat Toonces went without any treatment for 24 hours. NO LICENSED STAFF were there from closing Saturday until the vet was called in Sunday night.
The vet refuses to take responsibility for what happened to my cat. At first he admitted it but when he realized I was going to report him he started denying it. My cat never recovered. He was totally normal when he went in there, and he came out with dramatic, severe, brain damage that never went away. See our site at http://www.TheTooncesProject.com
Stay away from Kindness Animal Hospital in Maryland -- before they kill or injure your pet, too! |

Dr. Boyce is good! She is diligent, hard working, thorough, and has an intuition of a good clinician. Lots of experience too! She took care of lots of my guys' routine care without incident, but what really made me value her clinical skills was the way she handled a potentially devastating disease in my cat, Fedya, whose bladder was blocked. The poor fella had to be hospitalized for several days, during which, I received updates from Dr. Boyce, even at off-hours. She discussed the treatment with me and took my concerns into consideration. The only thing I wish she would do differently is prescribe Hill's prescription foods. I also wish she would adhere to a more minimal vaccination regimen. Otherwise, I believe she is a very good vet. |

One of Thomas McMichael, DVM's staff vets missed my beloved elderly cat's heart condition on an X-ray. When I confronted T. McMichael, he stated that this type of heart disease was missed because it can only be diagnosed by a cardiologist and cannot be diagnosed on an X-ray. For missing the condition, the staff vet eventually received a formal letter of censure from the vet board and attended classes "at the regional level to improve his ability to read radiographs and ultrasounds." When I confronted McMichael, however, and I made it clear that I didn't buy his explanation of the condition not being visible on an X-ray (and not being diagnosable by a regular vet), he became nasty to me and my whole family. We were all volunteers with a rescue group at the time, which had its convalescing homeless dogs boarded at his facility (for a fee). We took these dogs out for walks, spending up to 10 hours a week with them, as there are no outdoor runs at the hospital and the dogs are confined to cages 24/7. As soon as I confronted McMichael about my cat's missed diagnosis, he stopped all of us from walking these homeless dogs. After I was notified by the state board of the formal letter of censure issued to the staff vet for missing my cat's heart failure, my family and I added this information to the online reviews of the hospital. Dr. McMichael contacted some of these review sites to request that our reviews be removed. Two of the sites did, but the rest did not. To all of you victims of bad vets: keep fighting and spread the word to keep other people's pets safer. Take care of yourselves too. It's heart breaking, but taking action and educating others helps. Sincerely, Natalie Kramer http://cpahclientsbeware.blogpost.com |

Misdiagnosed my cat and failed to find an absess on his bum even though I continued telling them that he was having difficulty walking, and was continuously licking his behind. Sent me home with antibiotics and a $300 bill, said he had an infection of some sort. Took him back the next night because I saw a sore on his behind. A different vet looked at it, said it was an absess and the antibiotics would heal it. The next night, my cat was in so much pain and his behind was leaking blood and fluid. I decided to get a second opinion so I took him to a different animal hospital and the new vet told me my cat would require extensive surgery to lance the absess, remove dead skin around the absess, and remove the anal glands. He also said that the antibiotics would not have cured my cat. Will cost me another $700. Could have spared my cat from a lot of unnecessary testing, pain and distress if the avon vet had done a proper exam and listened to what I was telling him. When I went back to see the avon vet and tell him that he had missed the absess during his exam, he replied: "You might be right". |

I took my cat in for tests and he stayed overnight, the vet said that he was resting comfortably and they had given him some food; the cat was dehydrated and had lost his appetite. I was to pick him up the next day. The vet was going to discuss his diagnosis and the possible need for further testing. The morning I was to pick him up, the vet called to say that my cat had passed away that morning. The vet claimed that the cat's lungs had the possibility of tumors however she had told me the day she had only seen fluid in his lungs and couldn't tell if tumors were present as the x-rays were not clear. I believe this clinic was negligent in his care. |

Our pet Chula just passed away this morning after several days and $500 in treatment at this clinic. He was released at 5PM yesterday, supposedly in good shape, he suffered all last night (we were up with him) and he died in pain and distress at 6 AM. Complete misdiagnosis and we have opted for an autopsy. No animal should die like that. We are heartbroken and devastated. What would happen if this clinic was a family (human) practise |

This clinic is only about the money they can get out of you. They DO NOT care about the animals or the pet owners and their staff have a horrible "bedside manner".
I brought my cat in for a skin infection. She was given an injectable time release antibiotic and a corticosteroid shot. This was a $70 examination fee plus meds. She seemed to be better at first and then 8 days later her wounds were weeping again. I called the clinic back and they wanted me to bring my cat back. They would not waive the re-check fee. I thought this was inappropiate given the circumstances. That I had only been there 8 days earlier and paid them for an examination and office visit. I thought in "good faith" he would at least look her over again without charging me. They were suggesting at this point that my cat have a skin biopsy. I was quoted $100 for the anestetic and another $350 or so for the biopsy collection and diagnosis of cultures. I told them I could not afford this and was not given any other choice of care or advice except to perhaps apply Neosporin to my cats wounds (and that is because I brought it up). I even asked about how much it would cost to have my cat put down and after hearing the ridiculous fee for this, I said I guess I could just have my husband shoot her (to see what she would say) and she agreed and said oh yes, that is humane as well....?? - (WHAT??!!)She couldn't have cared less if I put her in a bag and threw her in the river.
Anyway, after 3 days af trying to apply Neosporin to my cats RAW skin I called back and suggested that perhaps the vet could precribe an oral antibiotic. He did (at no charge, which I guess he should have given it at no charge seeing he didn't really help her in the first place)and it did dry up my cats skin only to a certain degree. (I believe they did not prescibe a proper doseage for the infection to have time to heal, knowing I would have to come back.) Not wanting to have to call the vet again I used an antibiotic topical cream prescibed to my daughter for a skin lesion once a day for a week, and guess what....it cleared right up. Maybe it was taking a chance but I knew the vet would not do anything else for her unless I paid him for another office visit. Why could he not have suggested this before...he jumped right to the biopsy...at LEAST a $450.00 proceedure...do you see what I see?
Also at my dogs last check up they took it upon themselves to assume I wanted her liver checked. So they just went ahead and tacked on another $75 fee, after I was quoted the inital fee -TWICE, once on the phone, and once when I went in to pick up my dogs medication and NO ONE even mentioned checking her liver.
I did not double my dogs phenobarbitol medication as the vet prescribed at her last check up and was told the other day that because I did not double her doseage as directed, they would not prescribe any more. I either had to give it to her as directed and PRE-PAY for her blood work in advance or go without. I told them I was waiting for another month - it's Chritmas time and could not afford to do it right now. They would not hear it. So now my dog is going without and I'm hoping she does not have a seizure because they would not even prescribe enough for me to PROPERLY wean her off of it.
There is a real mis-communication at this clinic. Perhaps it is because the vets don't deal with the pet owners or LISTEN to them. They have their ill-mannered staff do all their dirty work. I have since changed clinics and will not return to this practice nor would I reccomend them to anyone else....this place is a joke. |

I brought my cat Theo to this clinic in rather bad shape. I had been going to another vet who after I spent a sizable amount of cash told me he could not find anything wrong, could not help me anymore and would refer me to a speciality clinic in Calgary. I opted for another opinion here in my own town and my cat is already doing 90% better. Dr. Linnell asked me questions, had ideas about and prescribed medicine I had never heard of from other vets. He also listened to me and confirmed what I thought to be the problem with my theo. The other vet made me feel like I was some over zealous cat owner even though my cat had not been eating properly for some time. I heartily recommend this vet if you are looking for someone as a first time vet or are not happy where you currently go! |

Brought my 7 year old cat in as he was extremely lethargic, and wouldn't eat, drink, or use the litter box, they immediately placed him on antibiotics, and never bothered with tests until the evening of day two from what I was told. The next morning I received a call stating that my cat had died over night, and was asked what I wanted to do as far as picking him up, or having him cremated. I told them that I would be in within a couple of hours and went about my morning coffee trying to not think about the millions of thoughts that were going through my head.
About 2 hours later, I went to the vets office to pick him up, and was told that he was in surgery, I asked the girl at the desk what kind of surgery, and the girl told me that they had opted to do a feline autopsy on him to see what the problem was, and he would be ready to pick up either later in the day, or the following day. The next day I called, making sure he was ready to be picked up, and was told that he had been sent out for a second autopsy, I asked her who consented or authorized that, and she said flat out said, you did, I said no I did not, and asked to speak to one of the vets or Dr. Phil Lukert who is the Owner, and she said that they were all busy assisting others and Dr. Lukert wasn't in. 2 weeks later after I finally called, and asked if my cat was back, I was told yes, he's been here for about a week and a half and along with the cremated remains that I did not authorize came a bill of 1000.00 un-itemized, she pulled up her screen and read off the procedures done, and turns out after the in office autopsy, my cat was sent to an outsourced company for another one, and then cremated, none of which I ever authorized. A bill that should have been about $300.00 was $1000.00 and they will not remove the charges because, they were trying to cover up their own screw-ups, and desire to perform experimental surgeries, and analysis at my expense, and maybe even my cat's life.
How does a cat go from growling, and meowing to dead over night? And what brought the need to perform 2 autopsies that were not authorized as well as cremation. No one can explain this, and no diagnosis has ever actually been given to me.
Please do not ever take your animals to this facility, something is not right here at all. My cat was my world, had the best personality but, we all think it's funny that the Vet complained he growled at her Tuesday, and was dead on Wed. Cremation is also a convenient excuse to cover up the poison of Euthenization. |

I brought in my 12 year old dog with a growth on his side that did not interfere with his quality of life. The first visit $200.
We discussed removing the growth ONLY IF he would survive. I paid for additional tests and X-rays to make sure our dog was able to withstand the removal of the growth.
The vet kept him under anesthesia for AN HOUR! A 12 year old dog. When I picked him up, there were dozens of staples that she wrote down were"self absorbable sutures and nothing needed to be done."
My dear dog succumbed to the effects of the anesthesia on his liver 2 days later.
When I called with concerns - they only returned my calls AFTER business hours - so there was nothing I could do but wait.
When I reminded them that I had repeatedly told them NOT to perform the surgery if he could not survive it ~ they told me I knew the "risks" and were rather curt about the whole thing. Neither the vet nor the woman in charge of billing returned my calls (I'm still waiting - 4 weeks later!)
The cost over losing my dog? Over ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. (A fee I would have gladly paid if my dog were alive and healthy)
I would NOT recommend this vet to ANYONE who wants to keep their pet. This vet DID NOT listen to me or follow my directives. She did a long surgery on an old dog and CAUSED HIS DEATH~! |

He and his office staff need some education and sensitivity training. |

I brought my dog in over the xmas holidays of 08 since he was vomiting excessively. After a litany of tests (totaling over $1200) the clinic failed to recognize the results from one of these test that indicated pancreatitis. As a result of this oversight, the clinic recommended another series of tests costing extra money. Of course, the vomiting hadn't stopped for another two weeks which almost killed my 11 yr old Lhasa Apso. Finally I decided to go to my own vet (who had been out of town over the holidays) and he read the initial tests and was shocked that they hadn't notice the obvious results indicating pancreatitis. After one short treatment, my dog recovered and is now back to normal. Not only did this clinic miss the diagnoses, but they almost allowed my dog to die and cost me an extra $1000. I managed to get some of the money back but only after many denials and heated arguments. I wouldn't go to this clinic again even if they were the only one available. |

This has always frustrated me as ferrets are constantly increasing in their popularity and should no longer be considered exotic. This point became very clear to me when I found myself in an emergency in the middle of the night, with my ferret in obvious distress and in need of immediate assistance I could not find a vet in the city to help me, until I called Dr. Kimura at McKnight 24 Hour Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Kimura was not only willing to help me but she understood the basics of my ferret and was able to provide top quality vet care in order to help us through our emergency. I will never see another vet besides Dr. Kimura after her professionalism, compassion and excellence in caring for my ferret was shown to me. |

Vets are quite nice, but they charge an incredible amount of money, taking compete and utter advantage of the unregulated vet fees in Canada.
AND, every time I bring my indoor cat in for a checkup or vaccination, it brings something home with it... usually just fleas (for which they overcharge products by at least 4x going internet rate). This time, however, he came back with some sort of nasty skin infection that is causing his tail to bleed and he is in serious pain. The vet will charge $185.00 for the privilege of looking at him again, plus whatever giant markup they will charge for the medication to treat the infection they gave him in the first place. Sweet racket, but the animals are just pawns they pretend to care about because they make more money that way.
Shop around, they are FAR from the best option. |

He also performed another surgical procedure on my dog without my authorization and it was this procedure that killed my dog. He allowed my dog to suffer for 7 days after this surgery refusing to provide him medical care. I was forced to take my dog to the Animal Emergency Clinic even though Robert Spooner had charged close to $1000.00 for this surgery but did not want to deal with the complications it caused my dog. I was told my dog was dying and was forced to euthanize him on the 7th day after this surgery and it killed me. This vet blatantly lied to me about the results of the surgery, that he had been unsuccessful in the surgical procedure, he is unethical and deceitful and has shown absolutely no remorse whatsoever for his actions even with the overwhelming evidence against him proving his gross negligence. Little explaination provided to support diagnosis, and discouraged me from asking my own questions. Long wait times. Building in disrepair. Staff very sassy. Vets are fat. |

I called Elk Neck to get instructions for giving him the insulin and they told me I hed to come in to be shown....when I explianed I did not have the money to bring him for a visit...they said it would be 125.00 and that is all they would be able to do for me and my beloved dog. My dog ended up passing before I could come up with the money. Dr. Lackey is only concerned about money and not the well being of the animals she treats poorly. Dr. Marc Katz was found in violation of the Veterinary Practice Act by the Maryland Veterinary Board, Docket # 05-005, in February 2006. This is a matter of public record and can be verified with the Attorney General's office. Dr. Katz left my diabetic cat, who was his patient, in the care of his son -- a young man with no formal veterinary training, who was not a licensed veterinary technician, and who was allowed to give insulin injections to my cat with NO supervision. According to their erstwhile admissions, his son picked up the wrong syringe to give my cat his insulin, resuling in a HUGE overdose -- 30 units of insulin (instead of the 3 he was supposed to get). Then, my poor Toonces subsequently went into severe hypoglycemic seizures, which according to the records of the hospital that cared for him afterwards, were due to a huge insulin overdose given by Dr. Katz son. For more on this story, see the Toonces Project at http://www.thetooncesproject.com. The state document disciplining Katz is also there. Dr. Katz is, in my opinion, clearly irresponsible. Moreover, I believe that he lied to me in the wake of these events, and is both negligent and dishonest. In summary, I think he is DANGEROUS and unethical. There are many more trustworthy and competent vets than he. Why put your pets in danger? You need a vet you can trust. This is not the behavior of a trustworthy vet.
This hospital claims to be under new management, but the fact is that the new owner, Zolkiewicz, was a part owner when this happened to my cat. HOW AND WHY did he let his partner leave the patients with a TOTALLY unqualified person resulting in this tragedy? DO NOT TRUST ANY OF THE PEOPLE HERE. Your pets are depending on you to use good judgment. |

In the first minute, the vet was told that the dog was a rescue, had been abused and had a very sore earache, the vet goes to grab the ear without letting the dog smell him or after petting the dog, so of course the dog snapped at him. He made the assumption that the dog was extremely aggressive and needed to be muzzled 24/7. Hmmm, first visit to vet, a past history of being hurt by people, with a very painful ear and having strangers grabbing at the ear...gee, I'd bite too. I thought vets were supposed to know that dogs will bite when in pain (the earache) or threatened (history of being abused, and stranger grabbing his painful ear)...
By the way, this 2 year old dog is the most gentle dog ever, loves to be around people, is very good with children. He's never bitten before. When he doesn't want to be pet anymore, he will just back away and go lay down. No signs of aggression - dominance or fear-based. |

To all who post here...
I stumbled across this website while looking for something else, and I stayed to read through the posts, and through Bebemau's story.
I just wanted to add my thoughts, and to let everyone know that my heart goes out to those of you that have lost beloved pets and companions, especially if you feel that the outcome could have been better, or at the very least, different than what it turned out to be. I too have been on that end, wishing "what if..." and missing my pet tremendously. Their loss is never easy, especially if it occurs before we are ready for it.
When you chose a veterinarian for your pet or your horses or livestock, it should be with a variety of reasons in mind (listed in no particular order...you have to decide that): location, economics (sad, but oh so true, just keeping in mind that in many cases you do get what you pay for if you truly have to go for the budget variety), expertise, knowledge, and compassion. But most of all, it needs to be someone that you feel comfortable talking to and asking questions of. For you are paying for a service that needs to be backed by knowledge...on the part of the vet so that they can offer the proper diagnostic and treatment options and also SUCCESSFULLY relay that information in a manner that you can understand so that on your part, you have enough knowledge that you can make the best decision possible for you, your pet, and (unfortunately) for your pocketbook.
The best vets will ALWAYS do a physical exam, obtain a complete history (lots of questions directed at you), and then try to come up with a plan for diagnostic tests to help either rule in or rule out possible causes. They should explain what the tests are for (ruling in or out whatever), and what they hope to find out from them. And in many cases, normal results are found...which is a GOOD thing!
Be advised that in many cases, a true cause for the problem is not immediately determined, and in a few instances, may never be determined. But the vet has extensive education in piecing together the physical exam, the history, the clinical signs and symptoms that the animal is showing, along with the results of the diagnostic tests that are done, and he (or she) will then put together a treatment plan (either medical or surgical, depending on what the situation warrants). The vet SHOULD offer you the "Gold Standard" treatment option first, the one that will give the most bang for the buck (and admittedly, it may be a lot of bucks). Always ask them to explain their reasoning behind what they are offering. If for personal and financial reasons you can't go with the "Gold Standard" package, by all means, don't just pack up your pet and go, ask what the minimum is that they can do diagnostically and still hopefully, direct them to the right diagnosis. And go from there. Remember to discuss treatment options as well. Competent vets that are confident in their skills and their knowledge will work with you. If they refuse treatment based on the all or nothing approach and you can't afford the all, then ask them to refer you to someone else and to make the referral call right then so that you hopefully won't have to delay treatment any longer than necessary for your pet.
And ALWAYS ask for a written estimate of what is going to be done diagnostically and treatment wise BEFORE anything beyond the physical exam and history are obtained. This way there will be no hidden financial shocks when you get ready to pay, and if you need to discuss payment options, this is also the time to do it AND get those options in writing as well.
And if you have to do treatments on your pet at home, then make sure to have it all detailed out in writing so that you have something to refer back to (no one remembers everything that is said at the doctor's office, we are usually too stressed, and/or distracted by our pets, family members, etc. to catch it all), and a number to call if you have any questions, including after regular business hours (that number could be an after hours emergency service or emergency hospital instead of your regular veterinarian, but they should still be able to answer your questions). And always ask for possible side effects to watch for with any medications you have to give or with any treatments that you are asked to do (these should be mentioned, but in case they are not...ASK!).
How do I know all of this? Well, I am a veterinarian and I believe that all vets have a moral and ethical obligation to do no harm and to do the best that we can (I believe that is called our Veterinary Oath!)...and if we don't know something...we shouldn't be afraid to state that either, heck, we are only human after all.
Thank you.
NC, DVM
All creatures great and small, the lord god made them all! |

Sick cat in tow I was told the vet could not see me and I was turned away. Maybe that decision should have been made by the vet herself, since when I actually got in to see a vet, somewhere else, I was told if left much longer my cat would have been much sicker.

He is a very unethical vet, he operated on ouy dogs back when surgery was not the answer. our dog was never able to walk after he did a myleogram on him, he injured his spine ot the point that our dog could not even bark.He left our dog laying on a cement floor from Monday till Thursday until he did the surgery, even tho he knew then that it would only make things worse. I did not sign or want a myleogram and I did not sign for the surgery, 43 days later after we tried to get him to stand and walk again we had to put him down. I also told the vet if there was more then one disc that he wasn't to do surgery, he did not even listen to me only did his own thing. Our dog walked into the Care Cente in Calgary Ab was treated very badly and ended up never walking again. He was only five and one half years old. I was never able to get the myleogram or the surgicial report to this day. We know that lots went wrong and are wondering why in Canada Vets don't have to be held responsible for what they do. Most of the staff and the two drs. we did meet were not very nice people, Dr. Connery states now that he told me of different treatments he could do, NOT TRUE, he only told me and my daugther that surgery was the only way for Tzar. This whole mess has left a big whole in my heart and the saddest thing is what he did to my big kool dog who would still be here if he just wasn't able to get away with doing his own thing and no one to question him.. Not fair and it has to be stopped, I need help with this one, need to know of other cases in AB with the Care Cente and the fifteen other Vet places they are with. The whole Vet program is very bad there, and also the staff, I would not recommend this place to anyone or the other Associate Vet Clinics in Calgary. Very Very Bad, and sad.

However, my 23 year old horse decided to be different and had a very rare complication of the strangles and I know without a doubt, that Doc saved my horse's life when he performed an emergency tracheotomy. He and his staff have been nothing but supportive and understanding when I have panicky moments while caring for my horse. She bit a couple of their techs (because she wasn't feeling well & they don't know how to properly handle) and they wanted to euthanize and chop off her head! When I refused to give the permission and opted for quarantine, she ALL OF A SUDDEN took a turn for the worse and was dead within hours. I wasn't even given the chance too see her. This is animal cruelty and abuse of the worst kind, because it was at the hands of a trusted professional!!! BEWARE AND RUN SCARED!!!!!! |

I was rushed by two large, snarling dogs in the waiting room at this vet. The receptionist responded by making pleasant conversation with the owner of the dogs (who bitched me out for yelling, "Leash your dogs!"). The vet heard the incident but chose not to respond.
I later asked if they had a leash policy for the waiting room. She shrugged and said, "no". I think it's time to find a vet that gives a rat's ass about the comfort and safety of their clients. |

Dr. Underwood is on call 24, 7 and is the vet. for many of the top boarding and show facilities in north west Atlanta. He has been our vet for over 10 years and though our boarders can choose their own vet 95% of them use Dr. Underwood. He seems to always be on call and he treats your horse as if it were his own child. Keep in mind that with these postings people are far more likely to take the time to rate someone if they had a bad experience than if they had a good one. Those who are disgruntled with him are only that way because he doesn't always tell you what you want to hear, but he does tell you the truth and tells you what's best for your horse. |

Great vets, both very helpful and my dog loves them! Which is good because he can be picky about people he likes/dislikes. My other dog also loves them!
My BC got fixed there and it was great! They were very nice and let me go get him/put him in the kennel. They also use a great program called snap so the neuter only cost 50 bucks!
It is a touch expensive but well well worth it!

However, if there's any way that I can work it out to have my pets visit Dr. Rahn while we are visiting my parents, he is my first choice. He is caring, compassionate, and thoroughly knowledgeable - just the best. |

Not sure why it cost me $600 to spay a cat. I was quoted much less, there were no complications but lots of extras added on. I should have went to my old vet for$200. Don't board your dog here either, they only get two pee breaks a day.Its humid in the summer too. Don't board your cat unless you want it in a three foot cage all day. |

All these people here at Clearwater Vet. Services, in Sarnia, Ontario, want is your money.
They charge for stuff that they are not authorized to do, so WATCH OUT for Your bill amount.
They charge terribly too much and are not very nice
people to deal with.
They feel that they are above all and can do and say to you what they want and are sarcastic.
They will also get your name and say that you own them money and put a black mark on your credit rating.
We found this out and the person has never delt with them. Someone gave his name and they sent him a bill and he has Never used them for anything.
Just be very careful, with these greedy people! |

The clinic is clean and the staff is super nice and attentive. I mean they even washed all of my puppies things for me!

The vet clinic is ok but costly, double what other clinics charge for the same service. Food and supplies cost more here as well. The groomers are wonderfull, photography is good but what ruins it is the daycare and boarding facility. Its really disorganized and no one seems to know whats going on. I think its new employees/lack of training and poor managment. You don't get all the info you ask for and the kennel area is not atractive or cheery in the least. It doesn't smell buit always looks dirty because of the cement and rubber materials used. The daycare area is ok but has pea gravel inside?! and the outdoor area is the spot where they used to have there dumpster. Don't expect fast and easy service, the computers seem to overwhelm the staff, I guess they are more complicated then a kennel needs and it seems everyone who knew what was going on quit! Don't get ripped off by a disorganized facility! |

BEWARE!! If your horse exhibits signs of fever, discharge and swollen glands, INSIST on a Strangles test, and demand to get a copy of it. If it IS Strangles, your horse and barn must be quarantined. FYI - only horses that he has immunized for Strangles seem to end up with the disease. No wonder he doesn't report to the authorities, as required by law!
I have it on the highest authority that, left alone in his care, horses are abused. He has an anger management issue. Steer clear of this man at all costs. |

Ask any local and they'll tell you that Basin Run is highly overpriced. When I moved to the area I took my cat there and learned the hard way.
Cost aside, they are an OK vet. Service is so-so but they tend to lean heavily on students who are learning to be vet assistants. Expect most of your face time to be with them rather than with an actual professional.
Also, expect to be shuttled out as if at a fast food restaurant. Knowing full well that I was being charged the flat $52.50 for the 3 minutes I usually got at my appointments I always tried to ask questions and was given short answers while they walked out the door.
You are much better off looking elsewhere. You can find the same or better service for a much more reasonable price at several other nearby vets. |

They also have very nice luxury "suites" for the dogs and cats, so you don't have to leave your pet caged up while they're at the hospital! I give GAH a thumbs up.

I have had multiple bad experiences with this office. I have had several good experiences, but the bad ones far outweigh them. Over the past 3 years I have had to wait for over an hour on at least 6 occasions; sometimes even when there is no other clients waiting. They ignored specific instructions I gave them from an emergency hospital I visited after my dog was hit by a car. Almost everytime I have gone in there all the support personnel are different. There has also been a high turnover rate of the doctor's themselves. I have had sporadic good service which is what kept me coming back, but overall I am very dissatified with my experiences at Austin & Associates.

Initial service with one kitten getting spayed, was great. Second kitten getting spayed, both service and attitude was extremely poor. Kitten was about 10 days along and they charged me the spaying plus half again for the pregnancy. I wasn't called or informed of her condition or of the cost. Extremely hurt and very unhappy. |

He is very very compassonate towards all animals and does have a soft spot for cats but he does like our nice cocker spaniels.
His surgical techiques are outstanding.
It took me about 6 months of seeing what he did for our rescue dogs before I moved my own dogs to his care.
He saved my one dog's life from Pyometra...it was a very complicated surgery.
He has done ACL surgeries on 2 of my dogs.
You can't tell today that they ever had surgery on their knees.
He has done complicated ear ablation surgeries on some of our cockers.
A very very good vet with outstanding surgical skills.
As a nurse of humans, knowing we have this type of vet looking after our dogs is very important. |

When my Cassie, then a baby puppy picked up "virul warts"(I had never heard of them before,I thought my baby had cancer or something)he diagnosed it in about a second and gave her a holistc remedy it cleared up the warts(which were in her mouth) in just about a day. There is no cure in Western medicine for these warts. That is just one of the great stories about Larry. Although we had to move about 40 miles away a few years back,I still take my pets to see Larry for anything other than severe blood loss or stuff like that there. 40 miles is too far at that point. we have a Vet about 6 blocks from us that we like too. |

I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Brauer. I took my draft horse in to see him a few different times in October and November 2006 for treatment of a hoof issue. I could not have been happier with the treatment we received nor with the cost of the services.
Yes, veterinarians should be in the field of veterinary medicine because they care for animals but they also need to charge for their services. Having worked in the racehorse industry for several years I know that vets and farriers often get stiffed when people cannot pay their bills. I do not think the stories listed below sound unreasonable.
I will definitely take my horse back to Dr. Brauer and/or the other vets at Chino Valley Equine Hospital in the future. |

I have a lab/spaniel who had FHO surgery and was initially told by Dr. Rahn that she might always have issues. Since her surgery two years ago, not a deer or ball is safe. She runs like the wind !!! For anyone who does not know what FHO surgery is, the ball joint and part of her bone in her hind leg was taken out. I have also brought strays to Dr. Rahn that have been injured beyond repair and have seen him shed a tear upon thier death. He responds day or night to any need whether it's a beloved family pet or a stray found behind a garbage dumpster. He is spearheading a Humane Society in Dodge County and has raised awareness of the need to spay and neuter animals. His staff is very friendly and knowledgeable and I believe that's a direct reflection of thier employer. I have since moved to Jasper County Georgia and am will to drive 2 hours to keep taking my heartbeats to Dr. Rahn. |

I am in total agreement with the browbeating received from Chino. I am feeling much guilt for taking my horse to an establishment that used to be top quality and is now a last resort.
Dr. Brauer was very patronizing and did not seem to care much about my horse. All he cared about was getting paid.
After my horse passed away I was in her stall stall, sitting with her and the staff came to ask me to pay the remaining balance. My mare was not even cold....
She died from pneumonia a disease where the fatality rate is 5%. I still havent heard the results on the culture they had to send to Davis.
I am sure if I ask for the results they will charge me for it....
If you want your horse to live do not take it to Dr. Brauer at Chino Valley Hospital. |

I have used this vet for my horses for 6 years and I was about his first client, and he is a lousy vet. You ask "why did I use him for so long"? Well, the alternative is just as bad. I had hoped that he would grow and learn. It didn't happen. I have had a horse with metabolic problems and laminitis for the past 2 1/2 years and he has never told me anything that is correct or helped me in any way to manage the horse. He is a dumb ass. I have to consult with a vet in another state to get the answers and help me with my horse. In other words, I have to pay 2 vets, one to take the x-rays and venograms and one to diagnose them, because he couldn't diagnose a pimple. In 6 years I have only been able to get him once on the weekend when I have an emergency. He is a 4 day a week vet. The only thing he is good at is giving me a big bill. |

They have always demostrated a real concern and care for pets, and most importantly to me, they are always honest with me about my pet's condition. They do not sugar coat the facts, or try to run up unneccessary charges. They have usually tried to work me in the schedule in and emergency for a small extra fee.
Highly recommmended.. They have made diagnoses in my pets that others have missed or ignored.
Drive a few extra miles to see these people. They are worth it.

This clinic is OK for routine care. I do not recommend it for sick care, especially for elderly pets.
Two times they have either ignored or missed a diagnosis.
Most recently was a couple of weeks ago when I took my dog in because she was limping and I thought she seemed to be in pain. My dog was a Lab mix, 12.5 years old, and weighed 97 pounds.
They gave her three vaccines; rabies, distemper and bordatella, and diagnosed Lyme's disease.
They prescribed an antibiotic.
I called back and asked them about my dog's pain and they acted annoyed.
They wanted to give her the usual nsaids. I told them that did not seem to help her anymore.
They ignored me.
A week later my dog stopped walking or eating.
I took her to another vet for a second opinion and they told me that my dog had cancer and was in distress. I decided on euthanasia. There was nothing ahead for her but a pain.
If you are the kind of person who does not want to extend your pets poor quality of life, I would not recommend that you go to this clinic, because they seem to believe in keeping them alive and suffering at any cost.
That was my experience. IMO, drive a few miles out of town and get a better vet.
There is a good one in Havre de Grace about 10 miles away.

After being a client here for several years with two cats, I was dropped from the practice after I failed to return x-rays that I had checked out. I checked out the x-rays because the Doctor could not succesfully diagnose my cat's limp. My cat had patellar luxation which required major surgery at a specialist. When I wanted to continue with Dr. Iberg for routine vaccinations and helath care, they refused me as I had not returned the x-rays. For many months they failed to inform me that I was dropped as I client and now my cat is past due for vaccination. I would have appreciated a little understanding that my cat was having to undergo major surgery and that circumstances were somewhat extenuating. On top of all this, Dr. Iberg continues to advertise for a boarding kennel (best Little Cathouse in Pasadena) that my cat returned from with fleas and a broken arm!! I informed them of this and said they really should not refer to them but they continue to do so. |

I can only speak for the feline side of how Dr Tugend handles his practice but I do know that he is a completely unconcerned, disconnected, uninformed doctor of veterinary medicine. When a cat needs a blood transfusion it is customary for the vet to have several options as to where to get the blood. My cat had a rare blood type and the doctor said "it will take too long to have this type of blood shipped" and that he "couldn't find anywhere near San Diego with B blood". Firstly I'd like to say... BULL SHIT! I went home and typed in animal blood bank in google and found numerous facilities with B blood that were able to OVERNIGHT packets of blood. Why is it that an "educated" man who deals with situations like this all day can't find a simple blood bank when someone that knows nothing on the subject can go and find blood with no problem?
When my kitties passed away he didn't even bother to call me even though I had spend thousands of dollars in his office. I refuse to go back to this vet. He is incompetent and genuinely an asshole. Pardon my language, but he infuriates me to no end. There are more reasons as to why I don't recommend this vet but it makes me too upset to type it all out! If you live in San Diego, I recommend finding ANY vet other than Dr. Tugend's office. |

The care provided at this emergency clinic was excellent, however the browbeating and strategies used for "collecting" money were outrageous. We were told when we arrived we would need to leave a deposit and they took the mare and foal into care. It was after 7:00 PM, I was able to provide them with $1000 at the moment and could provide a check then or cash payment the next day. They refused the check because it was a new account, even though I could show them on-line that the money was IN the account, and they harrassed myself, my husband, and the owner of our mare's foal well into the night for more money, despite the fact that all the banks were closed and we told them we couldn't do anything until the banks opened.
The final straw for me was that they called the foal's owner, a nurse, working night shift repeatedly (I left at 10 and found out later he continued until 11:30 at night) finally telling her that if she didn't get payment in by morning they would stop caring for the foal. They had told me the same. This was a baby they were providing fluids to intraveneously and tube feeding hourly. Basically they told this poor woman to cough up the money or your baby dies and we'll stand by and watch it happen. I've never expected such heartless behavior from any vet. The next morning, realizing that we couldn't possibly keep our horses there without losing them because the bill was growing so rapidly (by the time we left our horses had been at the facility for about 17 hours and the bill was almost $2500 for care that included some basic tests (which three days later now--we still do not have the results for), tube feeding the baby hourly, two lavages on my mare, shots for mare and foal, and providing fluids intraveneously to the baby. They made it clear that if we couldn't pay, they would keep our horses and that no payment arrangements could be made so we made arrangements to move them closer to the foal's owner.
We called at 10 AM and asked for a payoff amount as of noon. They didn't call with an amount until about 11 AM. However, when we got there with the money, they had chosen to do more proceedures on my mare and the foal, thus raising the bill by another $400. If we had only had the amount we had been told, they would have been able to hold our horses even longer, thus upping the bill even further. In my opinnion, this was the intent, since we had been clear on the phone that we needed the full amount as of noon because we were coming to pick them up. In addition to all of this, when we got the mare and foal where we were going, the vet was really upset that they had pulled the foal's feeding tube and catheter. Apparently, instead of a gruelling trip where we pulled over every half hour and struggled to get the baby to nurse and then had to bottle feed the baby, squirt by squirt into her mouth because she wouldn't suckle the bottle, the feeding tube could have been left in place so that we could have been sure to get enough milk into the baby and done so without having to take our safety measures apart every time we stopped. Since the primary concern for the foal was to get enough fluids and mare's milk into her, the risk of leaving the tube in was actually secondary.
I have to say that the interns were incredible and every one of them seemed to appreciate and care about horses, but the "surgeon," who was responsible was a nightmare for anyone going through an emergency with their horses. In the future, this clinic will be the last resort for me. Would I take my horses there again? If I had no other reasonable choice, of course. But I'd pull them out as soon as I could and provide alternate care. Oh ... and the foal that they were sure would require 5 or more intensive care days at a cost of $5000-$6000 (while my mare, needing 2 lavages and shots daily was clicking up at over $1000 per day) was able to nurse herself through that night and only required minimal care during the normal equine clinic hours at Bakersfield Equine Hospital, where the Dr. Cameau took care of our horses first, spent part of his personal lunch time hanging out with our mare and foal, laughing and enjoying Belle's first day of normal foal play and curiosity. It was a harrowing trip, but worth every moment to have my horses receiving not only excellent care, but the concern of an outstanding vet. |

Dr. Cameau is outstanding as an equine vet. He provided our horses with outstanding medical care and he exemplified the care, concern, and dedication to animals that I would expect from every vet. Sadly, far too few are actually interested or caring of the the animals they are competent to provide care for. Dr. Cameau was the complete package when it came to a vet. I left my horses in his care knowning they were going to be in the best possible hands. |
